The Mineiro Museum is a Brazilian museum located in the city of Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. It was inaugurated on May 10, 1982, at the site of the former Senado Mineiro, and is currently part of the Praça da Liberdade Cultural Circuit project.
The museum has its origin in the Public Archives of Minas Gerais, created in 1895 by Law No. 126. Article 2 of that law made clear the intention of creating a museum, based on the collection and classification, in a special room, of "pictures and statues , furniture, engravings, upholstery, embroidery, lace, weapons, jewelery objects, bas-reliefs, enamels, ceramic works and any manifestations of art in the State, as long as they are properly artistic or historical. "
Fifteen years later, in 1910, the institution became responsible for the Natural History, Ethnography and Historical Antiquities sections, bringing together the collection related to the history of Minas in the three periods - the Captaincy, the Province and the State.1
Its collection of 2,600 pieces includes sacred art from Minas Gerais, paintings, documents and objects of historical value. Currently, 36 collections from various institutions and individuals belong to the collection, among which are paintings and sculptures, pieces of sacred art and furniture, household utensils and objects for personal use, work and punishment instruments, insignia and armories, among others.
The museum building, from the end of the 19th century, was originally built to be the residence of the Secretary of Agriculture of the State, on the occasion of the transfer of the capital from Ouro Preto to Belo Horizonte, within the plan of the Construction Commission of Nova Capital. Later, it also served as the headquarters of the extinct Senado Mineiro - the Senadinho - from 1905 to 1930, and to the State General Pay Office, later the General Finance Inspectorate, until 1977, when the installation of the Mineiro Museum was authorized.
Many colleges have already visited the Museu Mineiro, it was defined as the most visited museum until the middle of 2012.
Opening Hours:
On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10am to 7pm.
On Thursdays, from 12pm to 9pm
On Saturdays and Sundays, from 12pm to 7pm.
